THE SALERNO HORSE
Also known as Salernitano, this warmblood horse is a result of crossbreeding between Andalusians and Neapolitans. It boasts a fantastic temperament, an incderible readiness to perform but also to act as a friend and obedient people pleaser.

It's a high quality horse that shows aristocratic ancestry, used as a cavalry mount and now also as a police horse.

The breed was quickly recognised for its strength and became to be held in very high regard, but has seen a decline in numbers in later years.

When Highmoor became a privately owned facility, it had strong ambitions to become a homebase for this wonderful breed; to give a natural and protected enviroment for first class horses that will become unequalled champions, teachers, friends and companions.

APPEARANCE
The Salerno horse has a slightly heavier head with a fine muzzle and flaring nostrils. Its ancestry from the larger breeds is apparent in the long, muscular neck and burly quarters. Its withers are prominent and short, the chest is wide and profound and the shoulders are sloping. It has a rounded and brawny croup, and the legs are well shaped with fine joints.
Though commonly found in colours of bay, black and chestnut, this horse may be seen in most solid full-body coats. It stands at around 16 hands high.

PERSONALITY
The Salerno horse is a sagacious and compliant horse, very easy to work with and learn. They seem to have a natural affinity for jumping, though has proven itself to be an excellent riding horse in general. Whether your intention is to ride and care for a companion or compete internationally, the Salerno horse delivers past your expectations.

They are known to be somewhat docile, but always show a certain kind of eagerness once mounted. As a rider, you will find that they listen closely and always try their best to follow, but often require a gentle and generous hand to compliment their alertness.

APPEARANCE

  • Head/Neck: The Salerno has a little heavier head with a strong, slightly rounded bridge and flaring nostrils. Its eyes should be alert and healthy, not too angled. The medium to long neck is muscular and elegant.
  • General Conformation: Around 16hh on average. The withers are high and pronounced and the shoulders are sloping, with a slightly lowered back and a declining coup.
  • Legs/Feet: Legs are slim and well built, with strong joints and solid hooves.
  • Temperament: Gentle and sagacious, but alert and forward when mounted. Though suitable for more advanced riders, the Salerno should not show any signs of excessive aggression or restlessness. Shows eagerness but patience and restraint without being unresponsive.
  • Colour: The Salerno is commonly seen in shades of bay, black and chestnut - but any solid full body coats is possible.

"The average typical height is around 16 hands high, with typical coat colours being of any solid colour such as bay, black, chestnut, grey and brown.

It has an intelligent fine head of Thoroughbred type and a strong neck set on good well-muscled shoulders with a deep and wide chest.
The back is short and strong along with powerfully built muscular hindquarters and well formed good strong limbs.

The hooves are of good structure and overall the breed is of generally good conformation, which makes it an ideal crossbreed." [Source]
